Chatterbox was a
well-known Victorian children’s magazine founded in 1866 by British clergyman
John Erskine Clark. Originally it was issued weekly; today it survives in the
form of bound annuals. It offered a
combination of short nonfiction articles, short stories, serialized fiction,
and wonderful illustrations (including hundreds of beautiful animal
illustrations by renowned artist Harrison Weir). The magazine survived well into the 1900’s
and was published in both Britain and America. (This can lead to differences in
volume numbers between the British and American annuals.) Several “knockoff”
magazines using the Chatterbox name were also published, including Belford’s
Chatterbox and Frank Leslie’s Chatterbox. For more information, please visit victorianvoices.net/magazines/Chatterbox.shtml
